Sacred Itch-Curing Medicine

He instructs you to take: bunlang stone, gold-leaf orpiment, camphor (phimsen), bitter eggplant fruit, khruea-vine eggplant fruit, coral-tree (thonglang) root, thong-phan-chang root, [a] white flower, siian bark, krabian bark, krabao bark, benja-khilek, chum-het (senna) seeds, lime seed kernels, phet-ma orchid, and red hang-lai root.

Method of use: Take all 14 of these ingredients, 1 baht weight of each, and grind into a fine powder. Mix with lime juice, enough to form into small sticks. Dry them indoors, not exposed to direct sun. Once dry, store them. When ready to use, grind [a stick] against red sandalwood water to dissolve it into a paste, and apply over the whole area of diseased skin, three times a day and before bed. Continued for just 7 days, it will begin to dry up and heal; applying it for another 14 days will cure it completely.

Properties: Cures itching, ringworm and tinea, and all manner of afflictions arising on the skin. Cured.

Rejuvenation Medicine Given to Women

He instructs you to take: 10 fully ripe fruits of somo-phiphek (beleric myrobalan), 10 fully ripe fruits of somo-di-ngu (chebulic myrobalan), and 10 fully ripe fruits of ma-kham-pom (Indian gooseberry) — fresh is even better — plus 2 teaspoons of salt crystals.

Method of use: Put all these ingredients together in a clay pot, add water to cover them, and do not boil on a strong fire — keep it at a gentle simmer. Drink it while warm, sipping continually until it loses its flavor. Drink in the morning, at noon, in the evening, and before bed.

Properties: Suitable for women with acne and dark blemishes, and faces marked with dark blotches that have not been cured by other creams. It is said: do not be discouraged — boil and take this remedy regularly. It will make one not unpleasant to men. It reduces oiliness at the skin's surface, expels impurities, and preserves the complexion. Your face will remain smooth, soft, and radiant at all times — even for a woman with children, aged 41–50. The text affirms that taking this medicine is truly effective, dear reader.

Rejuvenation Medicine to Cure "the Dove's Death" [impotence]

He instructs you to take: 3 kra-pok-chai [a plant part], and 3 stems of rak-khat-mon root — use only the root crown.

Method: Put all this medicine together in a clay pot and boil it. Take it 3 times a day, or before bed, or drink it in place of hot water or tea. Begin boiling and drinking from the first Saturday of the waxing moon (do not drink during the waning half). Once the waning moon reaches its 1st night, discard [the decoction] at once, then boil a second pot on the next first Saturday of the waxing moon. If [the patient] has still not recovered strength, boil and drink it regularly in place of hot water or tea. The text says its worth was set at five tamlueng of gold — it truly works.

Properties: According to the text, for any man whose organ of generation, or the parts that hang beneath it, have become withered and shrunken — flickering and wilted like taro scorched by fire — with no vigor, lying dormant for months: there is no need for alarm. Using this medicine works very well indeed, dear reader.

Rejuvenation Medicine that Manifests Its Power

He instructs you to take: kernels of the red-variety ngueak-pla-mo ("fish-gill" plant), 10 baht weight; the white variety, 10 baht weight; black peppercorns, 10 baht weight.

Method of use: Take all 3 of these fresh, dry them yourself, then grind together finely. Dissolve in genuine honeycomb honey. Take twice a day, formed into pellets the size of a jujube seed, 3 pellets each time, before meals.

Properties: Suitable for the elderly, for those who have become sluggish in sexual matters, for fatigue, and it also cures other ailments remarkably well. It firms up bodily stamina. Taken continuously for up to 3 months, it will manifest its power very effectively.

Wan-nang-kham Compound Medicine

He instructs you to take: black pepper, 2 baht; long pepper, 2 baht; saltpeter, 1 baht; both kinds of samae, 2 baht each; fragrant galangal, 2 baht; kaffir lime peel, 2 baht; wan-nang-kham rhizome, 2 baht; dried ginger, 2 baht; alum, 1 baht; camphor, 2 baht; black cumin, 2 baht; sweet flag (wan-nam), 1 baht; and phlai (cassumunar ginger), 1 baht.

Method of use: Grind the medicine finely, dissolve in hot water or liquor, and take it morning and evening.

Properties: Cures toxic-blood conditions, expels blood [impurities], and purifies the blood. Very good indeed.

Rejuvenation Medicine (For Women)

He instructs you to take: leaves of yellow "si-suk" bamboo, 1 handful; wild bamboo leaves, 1 handful; ya-sai grass, 1 handful; kham-foi (safflower), 1 baht weight; kae-lae [wood], 1 baht weight; sappanwood, 1 baht weight; ya-dam (black purgative resin), 1 baht weight.

Put all the ingredients into a clay pot and boil down to one-third of the volume, then pour off all the liquid. Take the boiled ingredients out of the pot and pound them until almost completely broken up, then mix them back into that same liquid. Place it in a glazed vessel and leave it out overnight to gather dew. The next morning, strain it through a thin white cloth, keeping only the liquid, and boil it once more. Take it morning and evening, before meals. This medicine must not be shared — do not let another person drink from the same pot [or] you will not see its benefit. If the illness is severe, boil it again repeatedly, until the flesh and skin become vigorous and radiant. It is said that whoever takes this once every 3 months will always look youthful.

Properties: For women with scant blood, dry skin, and a wan pale complexion; for those who have never felt fulfillment in intercourse. [It gives] a smooth, lustrous face, fresh and beautiful skin, and a full, firm body. Truly effective.

Medicine for Kasai (Wasting Disease) with Kidney Disorder

He instructs you to take: maka leaves, maka root, ya-kha (cogon grass) root — cut off and discard the leafy upper half of the plant, keeping only the lower half; nutgrass tuber; pomegranate root — one handful of each of these 4 items; upper hua-khao-yen and lower hua-khao-yen [Smilax tubers], 4 baht weight each; saltpeter, the size of 2 corn kernels.

Method of use: Put all the ingredients together in a clay pot and boil. Drink 1 teacup each time, morning and evening, for a full 12 days. If it appears cured, boil 2 more pots, 12 days each, to bring about a complete cure going forward.

Properties: Cures kasai with kidney disorder. This medicine has cured many cases before.

Second formula: If aching and soreness occur, take: soft-sinew vine, lian leaves, all 3 kinds of somo (myrobalan), red-vine creeper, thao-wan-priang vine, ching-chi bark, dried ching [root], nutgrass tuber, fresh krathue, sak-khi wood, and fresh turmeric-cane — 2 baht weight of each.

Method of use: Put the medicine in a clay pot, boil, and drink 1 glass-teacup each time, morning and evening.

Properties: Destroys the kasai conditions arising from kidney disorder. Cured.

Medicine for Children Who Are Emaciated with Tan-khamoi [a childhood wasting ailment]

He instructs you to take: 3 kaffir limes, each cut into 4 wedges, discarding 1 wedge from each; 3 red khi-ka fruits, each cut into 4 wedges, discarding 1 wedge from each; ee-niao root, lep-mue-nang root, khai-nao root, kra-phang-hom — a large handful of each; 7 chili peppers; 7 cloves of garlic; 5 slices of turmeric-cane; 5 sprigs of holy basil; 3 pieces of ratchaphruek (golden shower) pod.

Method of use: Put all the medicine into a clay pot and boil with rainwater and liquor in equal halves. Take it morning and evening. If the stool becomes white and foul-smelling, continue taking it. It is said to be very good indeed.

Longevity Medicine

He instructs you to take: fully mature nutgrass tuber, 11 baht weight; sliced, sun-dried krachai (fingerroot) root, 4 baht weight; sai-machin [root/herb], 1 baht weight.

Method of use: Grind all 3 ingredients into a powder, dissolve it in honeycomb honey, and form into pellets the size of a jujube seed. Take morning and evening, before meals. Suitable for both women and men who are sexually weak. It is said to be very good indeed.

Rejuvenation Medicine to Cure a Wife's Estrangement [loss of marital desire]

He instructs you to take: ching-chaeng tuber, cha-phlu (wild betel) root, fully mature nutgrass tuber, nutmeg, cardamom pods, krachai (fingerroot) tuber, black peppercorns, gold-leaf orpiment, long pepper, fresh bael fruit, and cannabis — equal weight of each.

Method of use: Sun-dry the ingredients and grind into a powder, dissolve in honeycomb honey, and form into pellets the size of a jujube seed. Take morning and evening, before meals. Strength and vigor will return quickly.

Properties: A longevity medicine; gives strength, promotes procreation, excellent indeed.

Poultice for a Breast Abscess (Breast Cancer)

He instructs you to take: 4 kaffir limes. Cut off the tops and hollow out all the inner pith. Then:

Fruit 1: stuff full with saltpeter. " 2: stuff in scraped, powdered ivory (elephant tusk). " 3: fill full with raw glutinous rice. " 4: fill with turmeric-cane.

Method of use: Put the [prepared limes] into a small pot and boil until the rice inside is cooked, then remove from heat. Pound them together until combined. Use as a poultice, and each time it is applied, moisten it again with the remaining liquid.

Medicine for Cancer

Take: male ma-yom bark, 4 baht weight; upper hua-khao-yen, 4 baht weight; lower hua-khao-yen, 4 baht weight; lian bark, 4 baht weight; thoranisan, 4 baht weight; white-flowered thong-phan-chang, all 4 parts, half a kilogram; phang-phuai-bok root, half a kilogram; albino-buffalo bone, 2 baht weight; chinsi, 2 salueng weight.

Method of use: Put all the medicine into a clay pot (consecrated with a prajukhat incantation), boil, and drink 1 glassful each time before meals — morning, noon, evening, and before bed. This medicine must be taken without interruption. Boil the first pot and drink for 10 days to know the result, before the medicine loses its potency; then, holding your breath, fling [the pot] away forcefully so that it shatters. Then boil a new pot in the same manner. Do not let time lapse in taking the medicine continuously — do this until 3 pots have been completed, and it will be completely cured.

Properties: Cures cancer of the breast, or of the womb, throughout the whole body. Cured. (Has been used successfully before.)

Medicine for Paralysis Wind

Take tri-kra-tuk, phrik-hang, yan-khao-khan vine, and moringa bark — equal amounts of all these ingredients.

Method: Pound all of this into a powder. Dissolve it in ginger water, phlai water, or vinegar — any of these will do.

Properties: Cures paralysis, contracted sinews, a crooked mouth, drooping eyes, dead hands, dead feet. Cured. Has been used successfully before.

Rejuvenation Medicine

Slice 2 bowls of mature phlai (cassumunar ginger) rhizome, [add] 1 bowl of tamarind paste, and 1/2 bowl of salt; pound together finely. Form into pellets the size of the little finger. Take 1–2 pellets each time, twice a day, in the morning and before bed. [Gives] vigor and strength — very good indeed.

Medicine for a Fishbone Stuck in the Throat

Swallow diluted vinegar down into the throat; the fishbone will soften. If the bone is [too] rigid, one should go see a doctor.

Sappanwood Medicine for Asthma

Ingredients: sappanwood heartwood, 2 baht 2 salueng weight; saem-san heartwood, 6 baht 6 tamlueng weight; thao-wan-priang vine, 2 baht 2 tamlueng weight; makham-kai leaves, 2 baht 2 tamlueng weight.

Method of preparation and use: On the first day, add water enough to rise a little above the medicine (about 3–4 glasses). Once it boils, continue boiling for another 10 minutes, then take the pot off the heat. Drink this in place of water, finishing it within that same day. The next day, add fresh water again and boil for about 5 minutes; drink as on the first day. Continue boiling and drinking in this way until the medicine loses its potency. It cures asthma very well indeed. Those taking this medicine must take it for 1 month before the asthma symptoms are cured. Some people who take this medicine experience drowsiness and aching throughout the body at night (there is no need for alarm — continue taking this medicine).

Medicine for Hemorrhoids

Pound phlai (cassumunar ginger) rhizome finely, mix with yang (dipterocarp) resin oil, and form into pellets. Take 2 pellets each time, 3 times a day, after meals, together with the topical ointment.

Topical ointment: Clean mai-ya-rap (sensitive plant) root thoroughly, grind and mix with liquor, and apply to the hemorrhoid mass. Cured.

Medicine for Asthma

Use dried plai (ไพล) rhizome, 5 parts; pepper and long pepper (dipli), 2 parts each; betel leaf (กานพลู) and camphor (phimsen), 1/2 part each. Method: Pound and mix together into a powder. Use 1 teaspoon of the powder brewed in water to drink, or roll into pills with honey the size of a jujube seed. Take 1–2 pills, 2–3 times a day. Another version: Take 1 plai rhizome and 1 bitter eggplant (makhuea khuen), dry them, and grind into powder. Take equal amounts of the powders obtained, mix in a pan, then add coconut cream. Simmer over low heat until sticky enough to form into pills. Roll into pills the size of a jujube seed. Take before meals, 3 times a day, 1–2 pills. Take: chettamun-phloeng (เจตมูลเพลิง) 2 baht, [ginger,] (ชิง) 2 baht, black pepper (พริกไทย) 1 baht, galangal (ข่า) 2 baht, both barks (เปลือกทั้งสอง) 2 baht, camphor (การบูร) 1 baht, cloves (กานพลู) 2 baht. Grind all the medicine fine, dissolve in liquor or honey, and drink either way.

Medicine for Nasal Polyps

Take: bacopa/phrommi leaf (ใบพรมมิ) 2 baht, licorice (ชะเอม) 2 baht, som-kung (ส้มกุ้ง) 2 baht, alum (สารส้ม) 1 baht, borneol camphor (พิมเสน) 1 baht. Grind this medicine fine, use to dab and cure nasal polyps.

Longevity Medicine

Take: salt 3, tamarind 7, boraphet 4 — that is: sea salt (เกลือทะเล, ground fine) 3 glasses, tamarind pulp (มะขามเปียก, seeds removed) 7 glasses, boraphet (บอระเพ็ด, cut into pieces, sun-dried, ground to powder) 4 glasses. Take: seed kernel of the saba fruit (เมล็ดในลูกสะบ้า) 3 baht, yellow sulfur (กำมะถันเหลือง) weighing 3 baht, garlic peeled to the inner flesh (หัวกระเทียม) weighing 3 baht, salt weighing 2 baht, lak-khao leaf (ใบลักขาว) weighing 3 baht. Method: Pound the lak-khao leaves and press out the juice; grind the [other] medicine fine and add it in; boil with coconut water, simmer, and set aside to cool. Use to apply to the scabies. Cured.

Medicine for Blood Rushing Upward (a postpartum ailment)

Take: wat vegetable, i.e. coriander (ผักวัด (ผักชี)) 1, wild vegetable, i.e. phak-sian-phi (ผักป่า (ผักเสี้ยนผี)) 1, vegetable from the swamp, i.e. duck-weed vegetable (ผักมาแต่หนอง (ผักเป็ด)) 1. Take one handful of each of these three medicines, pound fine, dissolve in mixed water (clear cesspit water) (น้ำขี้กลาใส) or in "virgin maiden's milk", i.e. lime juice (น้ำนมสาวพรหมจารี (มะนาว)). Drink half a teacup at a time, up to 2-3 times. Properties: Cures "blood rushing upward" in women 1-2 days after giving birth. It has often been cured, very effective. Take: jasmine flowers (ดอกมะลิ) 1 handful. Method: Pound fine, mix with 2 flakes of real borneol camphor (พิมเสนแท้), wrap in white cloth and squeeze out the liquid; use as eye drops 3-4 times a day. Properties: Cures cataracts, gives remarkably good results indeed.

Herbal Tonic for Pregnancy (Womb-Nourishing Medicine)

Take all 4 kinds of lotus stamens, 3 baht weight each; sarapi flower, 3 baht; phikun flower, 3 baht; chan flower, 3 baht; bunnak flower, 3 baht; jasmine flower, 3 baht. Boil all of this medicine and drink it. It is a medicine that nourishes the womb and strengthens the child within the womb.

Medicine for Toothache and Inflamed Gums

Take garlic, 7 cloves; black pepper, 7 grains; dipli (long pepper), 7 pods; phimsen (camphor), 7 grains. Pound or grind all the ingredients fine, mix with coconut oil, dip a cotton wad in it and pack it into the tooth. It will heal.

Medicine to Treat Ringworm (Kleuan)

Take a fresh areca nut (the kind chewed with betel leaf) and cut it in half. Use the flesh of the fresh areca nut to rub on the area affected by ringworm (the affected area should be scraped/scratched before applying the medicine). Apply morning and evening every day, and the ringworm will heal.

Medicine Called 'Akkani'

Take asafoetida, 1 baht; sweet-flag rhizome (wan-nam), 2 baht; rock salt, 1 tamlueng; philangkasa, 3 baht; 'yaowaphani' candle-seed, 6 baht; koht-so root, 9 baht; dried ginger, 10 baht; plumbago root, 10 baht; muk rhizome, 12 baht; black pepper, 19 tamlueng; cannabis, 19 tamlueng. Pound into a powder and dissolve it in honeycomb honey, or in hot water — either is acceptable.

Properties: Taken to cure all manner of parasites; gives great strength and long life; restores the appetite; for one who cannot lift hand or foot and feels exhausted, have them take this medicine — it gives great strength, and is very good for relations with a woman. Medicine to Purge Wind, Wind-Colic

Take benja-khilek (all 4 parts), 2 baht; benja-koht, 2 baht; benja-look-samo, 4 baht; benja-kun, 2 baht; benja-thian, 2 baht; benja-kleua, 4 baht. Boil this medicine down to 1 part from 3, and drink it. It is a medicine to purge wind and cure wind-colic. It will heal.

Medicine for Malaria Fever

Take bai-nut-phra leaf, 1 part; khao-reu, 1 part; wa root, 1 part; ching-cha-li, 1 part; all 4 kinds of thum-khi-mu, and kamphaeng-chet-chan (lum-phok), 1 part. Method: Take 2 baht total of all this medicine, put it in a pot and boil it down. Drink 1 glass at a time, morning and evening, before meals.

Properties: Cures intermittent fever with alternating chills and heat as its main symptom; when severe, this is called malaria that has risen to the brain. It has cured many cases before; effective. A gift of knowledge from Mr. Run Liwichit.

Medicine for Kidney Stones

Take pomegranate-tree root, a suitable amount; alum, a suitable amount. Method: Put in a clay pot and boil down to 1 part from 3. When about to drink the medicine that has been poured out — about 1 glass — stir in a suitable amount of alum. Drink 3 times a day, about 3 potfuls in total. Properties: Cures stones in the kidneys and in the urinary tract; the medicine dissolves stone deposits. It has produced striking results many times; effective. Medicine for Sinews and Wind [Ailments], No. 2

Take chara (all 4 kinds), 2 salueng weight each; koht-namtao, 3 baht; myrobalan fruit (all 3 kinds), 7 fruits each; nut-grass tuber (haeo-mu), cha-phlu root, thon-di root, khilek (all 4 kinds) — 1 baht weight each; ratchaphruek pods, 4 pods; maka leaf, 1 handful; yan-sakhan, red-flowered plumbago, ka-dom fruit, matum fruit, khamin-oi, thao-wan-priang, black pepper, ching, dipli-chueak — 1 baht weight each; yadam, 2 baht. Method: Once the ingredients are combined, boil the medicine down, then pour it out and stir in a suitable amount of Epsom/Glauber's salt into the glass to be drunk. Drink 1 glass before meals, morning and evening. Properties: Cures aches and pains throughout the whole body; cures wind lodged in the joints. It has cured many cases before; effective. Medicine for Sinews and Wind [Ailments], No. 1

Take khilek (all 4 kinds), saem heartwood (both kinds), black pepper, ching, dipli-chueak, than-di root, yan-sakhan, nut-grass tuber, red-flowered plumbago, khamin-oi, jing-jo-ton, fang heartwood, plai rhizome, ngo rhizome, kachai rhizome, small galangal rhizome, salak-dai stem, chara (all 4 kinds) — 2 baht weight each; and samo-phiphek fruit, 4 fruits; samo-thai fruit, 7 fruits; samo-thet fruit, 4 fruits; maka leaf, 1 handful; som-poi leaf, 1 handful; tamarind leaf, 1 handful; yadam, 2 baht; alum, 1 baht; kaffir lime fruit, 4 fruits; ma-kham-pom fruit, 7 fruits. Method: Once all the medicine is combined, put it in a clay pot and boil until it comes to a boil. Drink 1 glass at a time before meals, morning and evening. Properties: Cures wind disease in the sinews, sprains, swelling and pain at the joints, and aches throughout the whole body. It has cured many cases before, with effective results.

Medicine for the 32 Kinds of Wind [Ailments]

Take matum leaf, 1 tamlueng; cha-phlu, 1 tamlueng; haeo-mu, 1 tamlueng; phak-sian-phi, 1 tamlueng; black pepper, 6 tamlueng; bai-khanat, 1 baht; khon-thi-so, 1 baht; nutmeg, 2 baht; neem leaf, 2 [baht]; dipli-chueak, 4 tamlueng; dried ginger, 4 tamlueng; khamin-oi, 4 tamlueng; plai rhizome, 4 tamlueng; plumbago, 6 tamlueng; sakhan, 6 tamlueng; wan-hang-chang, 1 tamlueng. Method: Dry all of this medicine, then make it into a powder. Dissolve it in hot water, liquor, dried-ginger water, or honeycomb honey. Take 1 pellet the size of a jujube seed before meals, morning and evening. Properties: Cures aching pain. If it is not cured by dissolving in water, take a hua-thue [as printed], roast it in the embers, boil it to make the liquid a vehicle, and mix in 1 tablespoon of the medicine. Medicine to Nourish the Bodily Elements (Dhatu)

Take ginger rhizome, dipli-chueak, haeo-mu, cha-phlu, yan-sakhan, jetmun-yan (bora-phet), red-flowered jetmun, young matum fruit, khamin-oi, thao-wan-priang — 1 baht weight of each; phikun flower, bunnak flower, sarapi flower, lotus stamens — 2 baht weight each. Method of use: Combine all the ingredients and boil down. Drink before meals, morning and evening, 1 glass each time. Medicine for Chronic Suppurating Sores (Chantu)

Take khae-na leaf (neither too old nor too young), about 1 coconut-shell measure; take one large half of a ripe (haao) coconut. Method of use: Pound the khae-na leaf until fine, squeeze out a suitable amount of juice, combine it with coconut cream and a suitable amount of salt, and simmer down until dry, so that it separates into a solid residue and an oil. Take the solid residue internally as medicine, and apply the oil topically. Properties: Cures chantu sores, blisters that fester and discharge, bad lymph fluid, and itching on the head and body. Take it internally and apply it topically about 2–3 times; it will heal.

Medicine for Heart Disease

Take all 4 parts of the mai-ya-rap plant. Wash it clean, chop it into small pieces, dry it, then roast it until cooked and golden. Brew it with hot water and drink it in place of tea. Properties: Cures heart palpitations or abnormally forceful, irregular heartbeat. Gives strikingly good results; has been used to treat this with very good results.

Medicine for Wasting and Weakness

Take haeo-mu tuber, 1 part; loose black pepper, 1 part; ngueak-pla-mo plant, 1 part. Method: Take equal amounts of all 3 ingredients, dry them in the sun, grind fine, mix with pure honey, and form into pills the size of jujube seeds. Take 1 pill at a time before meals, morning and evening, and before bed. Properties: Cures wasting and weakness with striking results; has been used with good results before.

Medicine for Fat Blockage in the Blood Vessels

Take single-clove garlic heads (garlic with just one bulb, without segments), 21 heads. Peel them and place them in a jar or crock. Pour in honey until it covers the garlic heads. Seal the jar's lid tightly and let it ferment for 7 days. Take 3 heads together with the liquid before bed, for 7 days. Properties: Cures fat blockage in the blood vessels; gives very striking results.

Medicine for Sinusitis

Take all 4 [plants of] ya-nguang-chang (pull up the whole plant, root included), 3 plants. Wash them clean and boil with lean red pork, 3 baht weight. Put into a clay pot and boil with a suitable amount of water. Drink the liquid for about 1 month, and the sinusitis will be completely cured.

Medicine for Nerve Disease

Take red sandalwood, 1 part; nutmeg, 1 part; khao-yen-nuea tuber, 1 part; khao-yen-tai tuber, 1 part; khla rhizome, 1 part — all 5 ingredients, 4 baht weight each; fresh ginger, 9 slices. Method: Put into a clay pot and boil down to 1 part from 3. Take the liquid medicine; sugar (as printed: nam-tan-tai-not) may be mixed in as a vehicle if desired. Properties: Cures nerve disease; gives strikingly good results.

Medicine for Fainting Spells

Take granulated sugar, 4 tablespoons; sea salt (table salt), 1 teaspoon. Dissolve in hot or cold water. Properties: Taken to cure fainting, dizziness, blurred and dim vision caused by bodily weakness; very effective.

Medicine for Jaundice

Take tamarind leaves, in whatever amount is needed. Method: Pound them fine, squeeze out the juice and mix it with liquor, about half a coffee cup of the mixture. Take it once a day, every day, for about 20 days. Properties: Cures jaundice, and cures it very effectively.

Medicine for Urinary Difficulty

Take the root of the nam-wa banana plant, 1 handful. Wash it clean, put it in a clay pot and boil with a suitable amount of water. Drink this medicine in place of water. Properties: Cures urinary difficulty (inability to urinate, or difficulty urinating); gives very effective results.

Medicine for Diabetes

Take khilek shoots, 10 parts; alum, 1 part. Method: Pound both ingredients fine, mix with pure honey, and form into pills. Take 1 pill a day. If the diabetes is mild, taking it for only 30 days will cure it completely; if it is severe, one must take it a bit longer, and the diabetes will gradually and certainly go away. It has produced good results many times before.

Medicine for Asthma

Take human hair (hair from a person's head), a suitably large amount. Wash it clean, dry it in the sun, roast it until charred, and grind it into a powder. Mix with a suitable amount of liquor. Take 1 teacup at a time, once a day (this medicine should not be taken while an asthma attack is actively flaring) for about 7 days only. Asthma present for no more than 4 years will be completely cured.

Medicine for leukorrhea (white vaginal discharge)

Take 1 handful of alum, put it in a clay pot and boil with 3 curry-bowls of water. Boil until it boils, then let it cool. Use to wash out the birth canal, once a day. Property: cures leukorrhea, with excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for various itchy rashes

Take the peel of a ripe namwa banana and rub it over the area with itchy rashes caused by mosquito bites, ant bites, hives, and the like. Within about 1 minute the itching vanishes at once.

Medicine for red/pink eye

Take betel leaf (the kind chewed with areca nut). Method: roast it over the fire until wilted and steamed, then soak it in rainwater collected out in the open sky (rainwater caught in the clear open air). Add a little camphor and mix in. Use as eye drops, twice a day, morning and evening before bed. Property: cures red eye, blurred vision, and eye inflammation, with excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for night blindness / poor vision

Take 2 handfuls of tamarind leaves. Method of use: pound finely with 4 glasses of rainwater. Put into a glazed/enamelled container, add camphor and sea salt (table salt), mix in a little, and let it steep for about 10 days. Then strain through fine white cloth. Use the liquid as eye drops. Property: cures night blindness, cloudy-film eyes, and blurred vision, with excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for high blood pressure

Take mistletoe of five kinds (the whole plant down to the root), a sufficient large quantity, dry it in the sun, put it in a clay pot and boil, drink with a suitable amount of water; take this as a medicinal drink in place of tea. Property: lowers high blood pressure; headache vanishes at once. Excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for stomach disease

Take scorched rice crust (the crust at the bottom of the pot or pan), a sufficient quantity, dry it in the sun, crush it into small pieces, roast it over the fire until golden-brown, pound it finely and keep it well sealed. Use mixed with rice-water (the water that drains off when cooking rice), half a coffee-cup of each, and take before breakfast, before the evening meal, and before bed — three times a day, every day continuously, for about 14 days, and the stomach disease will be completely cured. The owner of this medicine used it to cure himself completely.

Medicine to revive someone fainted from a 'wind' ailment

Take about 4 tablespoons of white granulated sugar, mix with about half a glass of rainwater, stir well together, and give it to drink all at once. Within only 30 minutes the fainting spell vanishes at once. It has previously been used with good results.

Medicine for stones (gallstones / kidney stones / bladder stones)

Take 3 pineapple crowns (of the sour kind) (peel off the outer leaves, leaving only the core), cut into pieces, 3 pieces per crown, together with 1 small litre of raw mung beans. Wash both ingredients clean, put them in a clay pot with a suitable amount of water, and boil and simmer until the mung beans split, then remove from heat. Add brown sugar and alum, each in an amount the size of a thumb, mix into the pot and boil and simmer once more. Drink the liquid in place of water. When the medicine is used up, prepare and boil again; take only 3 potsful in total, about 14 days altogether, and stones in the gallbladder — causing tightness in the chest and stabbing pain — or stones in the kidney — causing pain in the lower back and along the spine and reduced urination — or stones in the bladder — causing difficulty urinating with radiating pain in the pubic region — will vanish at once, with excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for chronic rotting/festering sores

Take 7 leaves of thorn-apple/datura (neither too young nor too old), 3 slices of turmeric-ginger, 3 grains of 'male salt' (the long-grained rock salt used in curries), and 1 handful of cooked rice formed into a ball (burned in the fire until the whole ball is charred red). Method: take all 4 of these ingredients, pound them finely, and use as a poultice on the sore area about 3-4 times a day. Once the pus has dried up, stop poulting; within about 7 days the chronically festering sore will heal. It has been used with good results many times.

Medicine for corns ('fish-eye')

Take pickled mustard greens, cut off and discard the leaves, cut the stalk into round slices, roast lightly over a low fire, then use to cover the area with the corn. When it dries out, dip it again in the pickling liquid and reapply it over the corn. Do this many times a day; before long the corn will come out on its own. It has been used with excellent, proven results.

Medicine to prevent and treat tetanus

Take vinegar, soak a cotton ball in it until saturated, and press it over the mouth of the wound to treat inflammation, swelling, pain, and convulsive spasms, for wounds caused by stepping on a nail or by a cut from a sharp object. Excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for fresh wounds

Take a clean dry cloth and wipe the wound area clean (never use water to clean the wound). Apply genuine honeycomb honey all over the wound. Use a clean dry cloth to bind the wound firmly, and leave it for 7 days. Remove the bandage and the wound will have healed completely. Excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for toothache

Take 1 handful of the root of the rak tree (used for its flowers strung into garlands), wash it clean, together with a sufficient amount of sea salt (table salt). Put into a clay pot and boil down to a third of the original volume. Use the liquid as a mouth-rinse held in the mouth upon waking in the morning, for about 2-3 days, and the toothache will vanish at once. Excellent effect.

Medicine for malarial fever with shivering

Take both kinds of sandalwood, agarwood, black candle-plant seed, white candle-plant seed, cinnamon-like bark, bark of the chiang-phra-nang-ae tree, olive root, and the herb phak-chai-mahin. Method: take equal amounts of each of these ingredients, grind and form into sticks, dissolve in flower-scented water, steep in sandalwood-infused water; cures vomiting and nausea. Boiled noni fruit juice with a little camphor mixed in, taken, also cures it.

Medicine for headache

Take salt of the four kinds, chara of the four kinds, senna of the four kinds, myrobalan of the four kinds, and kaitha of the four kinds — weigh each of these five ingredients to an equal weight. Boil this medicine and drink it three times a day, before meals. Property: cures headache, dizziness, and pain at the temples. (While taking this medicine, refrain from concentrated thinking, writing, and reading; eat plenty of fruit and avoid fatty food; rest well. Take the medicine for only 7 days and it will be cured. Medicine for a wound from an ordinary (non-rabid) dog bite

Take dried namwa banana leaves, a sufficient quantity, put into a clay pot, cover with the lid and set over the fire until the banana leaves are scorched into ash, together with alum. Take these two ingredients in equal weights, grind finely, and strain through fine white cloth. Use to sprinkle onto a wound from an ordinary dog bite (before applying the powder, the wound should first be washed with potassium-permanganate water). Bind with a clean cloth until the wound heals completely. Excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for the venom of a rabid dog

Take the whole 'saab-raeng-saab-ka' plant (five parts — take the whole plant down to the root), wash it clean, pound it finely — about 1 handful of the pounded material — mix with liquor, squeeze out the liquid and drink it before meals; apply the pounded residue as a poultice on the mouth of the wound, about 3 times a day (once every 4 hours). It takes about 14 days or more until the wound heals completely. This remedy treats wounds very well, with excellent effect.

Medicine for swollen, festering gums

Take 1 handful of fresh bark from the khoi tree, wash it clean, put it in a clay pot with a moderate amount of water and boil; add table salt until very salty, add a little alum and mix in, boil and simmer for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat. When the liquid has cooled, pour it into a bottle and keep it. Use as a mouth-rinse when there is toothache with swollen gums. Cures swollen gums and toothache with excellent, proven effect.

Medicine for parasites

Take 3 young limes, peel off all the green skin, red sulfur, yellow sulfur, sweet flag, turmeric-ginger, and asafoetida, adding only a small amount. Method: grind the medicine into a powder, then form it into pellets; dissolve in hot water with a little liquor mixed in, and apply to the palms of the hands, the belly and back, the tongue, and the crown of the head (fontanelle). Said to be very good.

Medicine for insomnia

Take black pepper (1 part), nutgrass tuber (1 part), flesh of the sena myrobalan fruit (1 part), flesh of the Thai myrobalan fruit (1 part), flesh of the [samo-ding] myrobalan fruit — dry them in the sun, taking care not to let mould grow. Then take finely ground rice bran (the outer skin of the rice grain), put it in a pan and roast until cooked and fragrant, then grind it together thoroughly with all the other medicines, in equal amounts of each ingredient. When finished, seal it in a bottle so mould cannot grow. When using it, scoop out 1 teaspoon of the powdered medicine, mix with white liquor or hot water, or honeycomb honey, and take it close to bedtime, for 7 or 10 days only. Property: improves the mood, allows peaceful sleep, without startling or twitching. Very good.

Medicine for dandruff, to make the hair beautiful

Take a little vinegar and wipe it all over the scalp; the itching will disappear, dandruff will be eliminated, and an itchy scalp will be cured.

Medicine for 'samlaeng' poisoning — being poisoned

Take a suitable amount of clear limewater and a suitable amount of lime juice. Method: mix the clear limewater and lime juice together, add salt until salty enough, and have the patient drink it all at once; sweat will break out and the poisoning will vanish completely. - If poisoned by a toxic substance, use 1 teacup of clear limewater and drink it to cure the poisoning, and various forms of intoxication. - If acid has been swallowed (make sure), drink a suitable amount of clear limewater; it will be cured. - If it is dysentery, take tamarind pulp, pound it finely, mix with red lime paste in a suitable amount, roll into pellets, and take three times a day; the dysentery will be cured.

Medicine for ringing/blocked ears

Boil vinegar until it boils, then hold it near the ear so the steam seeps into the ear; cures ringing in the ears. Very good.

Cassumunar-ginger oil for bruises and sprains

Take 2 kg of cassumunar ginger rhizome, 1 kg of coconut oil, 14 grams of camphor, 14 grams of clove flowers. Method: pour the coconut oil into a pan and set it over the fire. Slice the cassumunar ginger into thin pieces. When the oil is very hot, put the ginger in to fry, until it turns crisp and dark brown, and the oil turns clear yellow (be careful of burning). Scoop out the ginger pieces. Pound the cloves fine and put them into the oil to continue frying; lower the heat to keep it gentle, so that the oil in the cloves does not evaporate away. Fry for about 10 minutes, then strain through fine white cloth. When the oil has cooled somewhat, mix the camphor into the oil. Put it in a container and seal the lid tightly to prevent evaporation. When the oil has cooled completely, shake it or stir it with a stick until well mixed, then fill it into small bottles and seal the lids tightly, for future use. Method of use — Properties: for bruises, apply the oil thinly, twice a day, morning and evening (clean the wound before applying the oil each time). For sprains, bruising, and swelling, apply the oil all over the affected area with a gentle massage, 3-4 times a day. For swollen joints and numbness, apply the oil generously, and use a hot-water bottle wrapped in cloth to compress the affected area, twice a day, morning and evening, or whenever there is pain or numbness. It will be cured.

Remedy for saeng-o disease (tonsillitis)

Take red slaked-lime paste in a suitable amount, and 3 half-shells of cockle [หอยแครง]. Camphor [พิมเสน], 3-4 flakes.

Method of preparation: Put the red lime into the cockle-shell halves until full, then burn it over an open flame until it blazes. Leave it to cool, which makes it brittle and easy to grind. Then mix in the camphor and grind together until finely blended.

Method of use: Squeeze lime juice into the medicine powder until fairly liquid. Using a chicken feather that has been boiled to sterilize it, dab and paint the medicine around the sore area or on any bumps. Reapply at intervals as seems appropriate. (If after using this medicine for one day there is no improvement, stop using it.)

Properties: Cures saeng-o disease (tonsillitis), inability to swallow saliva, a thick coating on the tongue, bad breath. It has cured many cases before, with good results. Mr. Chom Inthonsombat, donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for head lice

Soak the scalp thoroughly with vinegar, cover the head with a cloth for a good while, then gradually wash the hair. The lice will die and the nits will all wither away. Cured.

Remedy for a wound from a nail puncture

Take cotton wool soaked thoroughly in vinegar and apply it over the wound to treat inflammation, pain, swelling, and any twitching arising from a wound caused by a nail or a sharp object piercing the skin. If the nail was rusty, pour vinegar into a basin, mix in a suitable amount of water, and soak the foot in the basin for about 10 minutes; the acid in the vinegar will draw all the rust out of the wound. Remedy for children who have no appetite

Take 1 handful of Bermuda grass [หญ้าแพรก], red holy basil, white holy basil, ใบมะกา leaves [name kept as printed], red ขี้กา fruit [name kept as printed], bark of the ไข่เน่า tree [name kept as printed], ขี้วัวป่า [name kept as printed], beleric myrobalan [สมอเทศ], chebulic myrobalan [สมอไทย], red sandalwood [จันทน์แดง], white sandalwood [จันทน์ขาว], lotus root, ชะลูด [herb, name kept as printed], and กระลำพัก heartwood [name kept as printed].

Method: Take equal amounts of all the medicines, put in a clay pot, boil down from 3 parts to 1. Drink before meals, three times a day.

Properties: Stimulates the appetite and improves the blood and vital humors. Effective.

Remedy for diarrhea with bloody dysentery

Take 1 piece of cashew-tree bark, 1 piece of areca-palm bark, 1 piece of tamarind-tree bark.

Method: Shave off only the outer bark down to the inner layer, taking only the scrapings each time; combine in equal amounts, put in a clay pot and boil. Drink before every meal, 1 glass each time.

Remedy for various eye ailments

Take 4 kaffir limes, peel and wash clean, squeeze out only the juice to fill a cup (make a cup of a suitable size). Half a cup of Thai epsom/purgative salt [ดีเกลือไทย]. Fine-quality camphor, 1 fueang weight. Grind the camphor together with the salt in a mortar. Add the kaffir-lime juice in drop by drop until finished. Then take a length of fresh wild bamboo and pour the medicine into it. Use pennywort [ใบบัวบก] leaves to make a stopper, and roast the sealed bamboo tube well until the liquid turns yellow (if it is still white/clear it is not ready). Once roasted, strain and put into a bottle. Use as an eye drop once a day, in the evening after the sun has set.

Properties: Cures various eye ailments. Someone who used it reported being blind and unable to see in both eyes, and was cured before long. It also works for white specks/cataracts the size of a longan pit on the eye. (Before use, make a sincere vow/dedication to the medicine's guardian.) Effective.

Remedy for beriberi

Take: Andrographis (king-of-bitters) [ฟ้าทะลายโจร], leaves of the large ชุมเห็ด [Senna alata], salt.

Method: Pound all the medicine into a fine powder, dissolve in honeycomb honey, and take before meals, in doses the size of a jujube seed, morning and evening.

Properties: Cures beriberi. Taking it regularly gives great strength.

Remedy for "changing one's zodiac sign / fortune"

Take: mace [ดอกจันทน์] 1 part, nutmeg seed [ลูกจันทน์] 1 part, cardamom [กระวาน] 1 part, clove [กานพลู] 1 part, licorice [ชะเอมเทศ] 1 part, plumbago root [รากเจตมูลเพลิง] 1 part, สมุลแว้ง bark [name kept as printed] 1 part, หัสคุณเทศ [Croton herb, name kept as printed] 1 part, pepper [พริกไทย] 1 part, ใบหนาด leaf [Blumea, name kept as printed] 1 part, bael fruit [มะตูม] 1 part, kaffir lime peel [ผิวมะกรูด] 1 part, curcuma zanthorrhiza [ขมิ้นอ้อย] 1 part, cassumunar ginger rhizome [หัวไพล] 1 part, nut grass [แห้วหมู] 1 part, asafoetida [มหาหิงค์] 1 part, epsom/purgative salt [ดีเกลือ] 1 part.

All of the medicine weighs 1 baht per part; if making a larger batch, increase the weight proportionally. Once finely ground, put it into a bronze pan (do not use any other, iron, pan). Mix with honeycomb honey until fairly liquid. Stir with a wooden paddle, not letting the fire get too strong, until it becomes sticky and dry enough to be rolled into pellets. If honey is not available, one may instead use a single sprouted coconut with a shoot one cubit long — press out its coconut cream and simmer it down until dry and oily.

Properties: Improves the blood and vital humors. If a mother takes it, it makes her child extraordinary; it "changes one's fortune" and gives a bright, fresh complexion. Can be taken by both men and women. Take one pellet, the size of a jujube seed, morning and evening, before meals. Effective.

Take all 5 parts of the large ชุมเห็ด plant [Senna alata], small galangal, large galangal — 6 baht weight of each. Curcuma zanthorrhiza [ขมิ้นอ้อย], 6 baht. Aloe purgative resin [ยาดำ], 6 baht. Cassumunar ginger rhizome [หัวไพล], 6 baht. Epsom/purgative salt [ดีเกลือ], 6 baht. Rock salt [เกลือสินเธาว์], 6 baht. Tamarind pulp [ส้มมะขามเปียก], 1 baht. เหมี้ยงผลา [name kept as printed], 12 baht. Remedy for venomous snake bite

Take: fresh เถาคันแดง vine [name kept as printed], and 1 handful of raw rice.

Method: Take 4-6 fresh เถาคันแดง leaves, pound finely. Take 1 handful of raw rice, add half a teacup of water and 2 tablespoons of rice-rinsing water, dissolve together with the เถาคันแดง leaves, strain and drink only the liquid.

Take another 3-4 เถาคันแดง leaves, pound finely, and use as a poultice on the wound.

Remedy for convulsions

Take: clear lime water [น้ำปูนใส], หญ้าพับงูแดง [herb, name kept as printed], thorny pods [ฝักหนาม], camphor [พิมเสน].

Method: Pound all the medicine finely, mix in the clear lime water and camphor, and drink once a day before sleeping, or at the time of a convulsion.

Fermented tonic for dried, hardened blood stuck at the spine

Ferment in tamarind-pulp water, in a suitable amount. Drink morning and evening, before meals. Cures spoiled/bad blood and irregular menstruation. It is a blood-purifying tonic that gives a beautiful complexion.

Remedy for nasal hemorrhoids/polyps, granted by the deity of Wat Nang Lat

Take: ข้าวเย็นเหนือ root [Smilax, name kept as printed], 1 chang weight, 7 หมากหมก plants [name kept as printed], and 1 half-shell of ripe coconut flesh.

Method: Put all the medicine in a clay pot, boil down from 3 parts to 1. Take 3 times a day, before meals, half a glass of water each time.

Properties: Cures nasal hemorrhoids/polyps. (While taking this medicine, do not eat fermented/pickled food, very salty or very fatty food, scaleless freshwater fish, turtle, soft-shell turtle, shrimp, shellfish, or crab.) Effective.

Remedy for internal bruising/injury, granted by the deity of Wat Nang Lat

Take: รากประทุมราชา root [name kept as printed], 1 handful, รากปู่เจ้าคาคลอง root [name kept as printed], 2 handfuls, red frangipani flower [ลั่นทม], 14 grams, ต้นมะคำไก่ plant [name kept as printed], 140 grams, ข้าวเย็นเหนือ root [Smilax], 140 grams, ข้าวเย็นใต้ root [Smilax], 140 grams.

Method: Put all the medicine in a clay pot, boil down from 3 parts to 1. Take half a glass each time.

Properties: Cures internal bruising/injury very well. (While taking this medicine, do not eat white glutinous rice or fermented/pickled food; do not bathe for 3 days.)

Remedy for eating and never growing old

Take: 100 limes, squeeze out only the juice. 1 kg of granulated sugar. Pepper, 4 baht weight.

Method: Combine all the ingredients together; pound the pepper finely, put it all in a jar to keep. Drink 1 teacup's worth before sleeping. Prepare this only during the Buddhist Lent [พรรษา].

Remedy for sudden/acute wind-illness

Take: 108 kaffir-lime leaves, 108 lime leaves, 108 ใบหมุย leaves [name kept as printed], 108 ใบรุม leaves [name kept as printed], 108 ใบเทียม leaves [name kept as printed], pomelo [ส้มโอ], 108 leaves, a suitable amount of ใบสัมป่อย leaves [name kept as printed], and a suitable amount of tamarind leaves.

Method: Inscribe the sacred syllables of the Buddha's virtues, the Dhamma's virtues, and the Sangha's virtues onto the kaffir-lime leaves, lime leaves, ใบเทียม leaves, and pomelo leaves. Recite the incantation over them yourself. Put them in a clay pot, boil down from 3 parts to 1. Drink before every meal and before sleeping.

Properties: Cures sudden/acute wind-illness [stroke-like collapse] and chronic cases of it. Cured. Phra Athikan Phrang, Wutthamuni [monastic title] Wat Khok Sai, Phatthalung, donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for Kidney Disease

Take: bunnak flower, nutgrass tuber (haeo mu), Indian-gooseberry fruit, the wild-betel plant in all four parts (root/stem/leaf/fruit), Ceylon-leadwort root, pepper, foreign myrobalan fruit, northern "cool-rice" tuber (hua khao yen nuea), lady's-fingernail flower (lep mue nang), Senna alata in all four parts, hua ching, sakhan stem, Mammea siamensis flower, black cane, white cane, hidden cane, striped cane, and bird cane (varieties of "au"), seven pods of golden-shower tree, bird-dropping long pepper, hua thue, plai rhizome, jasmine flower, and dried aloe resin, three baht by weight; Thai myrobalan fruit and pha mai in all four parts, and one baht of alum. Remedy for the "Beaded-Necklace" Fistula Boil

Take: one whole "ya nu" plant, half of one ripe coconut, seven "eyes" from a Siamese-bamboo cane, seven discs of honeycomb, and four pig's trotters. How to use: Put everything into a clay pot and boil to a rolling boil; drink one glass before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Properties: Cures fistula boils, or the "beaded-necklace" boils on the neck that turn to pus and spread all around the neck. Boiling and drinking this cures it. (It has cured many cases before.) Remedy for All Wind Ailments

Take: two kinds of "kum" wood, two kinds of galangal, bael leaf, Vitex leaf, neem leaf, "cha-ngo" tuber, "chet-mun yan", cassumunar turmeric, plai rhizome, hua thue, ginger rhizome, long-pepper vine, sakhan fruit, wild-betel root, nutgrass, Ceylon-leadwort root, white-flowered Ceylon leadwort, and pepper in an amount equal to all the other herbs combined. Method: Grind all the herbs into powder. If the belly is bloated, dissolve it in hot water; or in "nam sing" to stop vomiting; or if it is colic, dissolve it in boiled noni-fruit water. Take before meals. Properties: Cures all wind ailments, morning and evening.

Remedy for Dog-Bite Poison

Take: charcoal embers and sea salt. Method: Grind both ingredients until fine, mix with water, wash the wound clean and wipe dry, then apply this medicine to cover the wound. Properties: Cures dog-bite poison — it has proven effective, verified. Phra Sawang Sirijandho, Wat Na Ai, Phatthalung — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for Malayan Pit Viper Bite

Take three young shoots of "sap ruk", pound them together with one peck-measure of liquor; then grind the root of bitter "hmui" wood with liquor and knead it together with the "sap ruk" shoots. Drink the resulting liquid, and pack the pulp onto the mouth of the wound. After drinking this medicine the feet will feel heavy and numb; before long it heals on its own. Ajarn Prachuap Phetnoi — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for Subduing Poison, a Divine Gift

Take: Siamese-cassia (khilek) in all four parts, "tam sao" in all four parts, "ya nu" plant, root of "ai bao", "yan en" tuber, the plant called "ton tai plai pen" ("dead at the root, alive at the tip"), and "khura pria". How to use: Take the herbs in equal proportion, put in a clay pot, and boil down from three parts to one. Take half a glass three times a day before meals; results are seen within four days. Properties: Cures chronic kidney disorder, aching hips, aching back, yellow urine, and general soreness. It cures completely. Remedy for Coughing Up Blood

Take: two kinds of "ya khan" grass, sheaths of Siamese bamboo, a male sugar-palm's flower spike, [coconut?], alum, and rakam-palm fronds. How to use: Burn everything to ash and dissolve the ash in boiled water; drink it. Properties: Cures coughing up blood. Phra Athikan Thon Pokngukro, Wat Phra Koet, Phatthalung — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for a Long Life

Take ten ripe bael fruits; use only the flesh, discard the rind. Take pepper in an amount half that of the bael fruit. How to use: Pound both into a fine powder, dissolve it with raw honeycomb honey, and let it ferment in a sealed, airtight container. Take a dose the size of a jujube seed once a day before bed, every day for a full three months. Properties: Strengthens the body, corrects excess in the blood and wind, brightens the spirit, prevents easy fatigue, and prolongs life. It is effective.

Remedy for "Mareng La" (a Spreading Weeping Skin Sore)

Take: three "sabа" seeds, three "wat" seeds, and three chaulmoogra seeds. Roast all three over fire, grind fine, and mix with sesame oil. Wash the sore clean before applying. Apply the medicine twice a day, morning and evening. Properties: Treats "mareng la" skin disease with oozing lymph and itching. It cures completely. Phra Khru Nitidhammaprayut, Wat Khuan Nimit, Phatthalung — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for Blood [Disorder] During the Postpartum Fire-Confinement

Take: "root of blood", root of a thorny fig (it is thorny), "ket khao" root, "khrop na" root, wild-bamboo root, large-vine root, "mai nga" root, "su rong" root, "mak mok" root, "thrai" grass, thin sharp-edged grass, "meng cho" root, "sao lao" root, "sao yut" root, "thon dee" root, and "mai thao yai mom" root. How to use: Take all the herbs in equal proportion, put in a clay pot, and boil down from three parts to one. Drink before meals, morning and evening. Properties: Cures the fever of the postpartum fire-confinement period, and corrects bad blood. It cures completely.

Remedy for Dizziness from Wind

Take: soap-pod (som poi) in all four parts, "chum het" in all four parts, and seven chilies. Boil these and drink; it cures dizziness from wind. (Before taking the medicine, call to mind Ajarn Mun of Wat Khao Daeng.) Phra Luean Siripanyo, Wat Thung Ching Nang — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for Asthma

Take: Ceylon-leadwort root, tinospora vine, sakhan stem, dried ginger, nutgrass, loose pepper, "krathok rok" root, and male ivy-gourd root. How to use: Take one baht weight of each, dry in the sun, grind to powder, dissolve with raw honeycomb honey or bitter-orange, kaffir-lime, or lime juice, mixing in borneol camphor; take regularly and it will cure within one month. Properties: Cures asthma. It is effective. Another formula: take a certain grass, stem and leaf together, and the root of "hmui" with black shoots, in equal amounts; boil in pure sugar-palm vinegar and take morning and evening, consistently. If the illness is advanced, once benefit is seen boil a fresh batch again until cured. If wheezing breaks out on top of it, take one pig's lung, slice and wash clean; about seven mature betel leaves, sliced and washed clean; black peppercorns equal in number to the patient's age, crushed just enough to crack; a fairly generous amount of table salt; boil all together until tender; eat both broth and meat entirely — it will cure before three lungs' worth is used. Remedy for [Balancing] the Wind Element (Wayo)

Take: nutmeg fruit and mace (nutmeg flower), one part each; the three pungent spices, Ceylon-leadwort root, and wild-betel root, four parts each; sakhan vine, six parts. How to use: Pound all the herbs together into a powder; dissolve as a vehicle in honey, ginger juice, or hot water. Properties: Cures various internal wind ailments; cures hemorrhoids with wasting thinness and sallow-yellow emaciation. Very good indeed.

Remedy for Intestinal Hemorrhoids

Take: rock salt, Thai salt, roasted "mon tai yak", nutgrass, tinospora vine, and fingerroot. How to use: Take one baht of each, pound into powder, dissolve in honey or hot water and drink. Remedy for Ulcerated Stomach and Intestines

Take longan seeds and roast them; remove the black shell, then pound them fine so that no coarse residue remains. Take it continuously for about 7–14 days, and the ulcerated intestine will heal back to normal. Dissolve this medicine in hot water and take one teaspoon, twice a day, before meals. Properties: Cures ulcerated intestinal disease. It cures completely. Athikan Rom Chakhro, Wat Hua Mon — donated as a gift of knowledge.

Remedy for [Skin] Discoloration/Scarring

Take sesame oil, 40 satang in weight, and rabbit droppings in an amount matching the user's age. Roast the rabbit droppings until crisp — take care not to burn them — then grind fine and mix with the sesame oil, shaking well to combine. Apply this medicine before sleeping; apply thinly, and apply often. Properties: The condition called "dang" arises after a fire burn or hot-water scald, leaving white discolored patches that are difficult to cure, with hair failing to regrow. Remedy for Nerve Disease (Neurosis)

Take: bitter-cucumber fruit, "saeng jai" seed, tea leaf, nutmeg, Bacopa, the twigs and leaves of a musk-scented plant, spikenard, "kot kaklinng", coriander fruit, and red radish tuber. How to use: Take all these herbs in equal weight, boil to drink three times a day before meals; one potful should cure it. If not yet cured, boil another pot. While taking the medicine, keep the patient in a calm, quiet place, forbidding any activity; within just 10 days it will be cured. Properties: Cures nerve disease — insomnia, constant dread of danger, refusal to accept anyone's reasoning, loss of self-control, and aimless dreaming. It cures completely. Ointment for the Belly to Dispel Wind

Remedy for Diabetes

Take: one "elephant orchid" tuber, one large pandan root, one green "yan wat" tuber, and the thorny "namyapyiao" plant in all four parts. Properties: Cures diabetes and early-stage as well as chronic kidney-funnel inflammation (nephritis). How to use: Take all the ingredients in equal amount, put in a clay pot, and boil to drink. When symptoms ease or resolve, boil two more pots. Before taking the medicine, first swirl alum through the water 3–4 times. Drink one glass each time, before meals and before bed. Many have been cured this way. Once cured, make merit with "namwa" bananas and dedicate the merit to the medicine's guardian as a gift of knowledge.

Formula 2: Take "seven-layer fortress" bark (lum pho), chop and dry in the sun; boil and drink regularly, it cures. Formula 3: Take "king of bitters", boil it or make it into powder and take regularly; it cures gradually. Formula 4: Take "cat's whiskers" grass, stem, flower, and leaf, fresh or dried into one packet; boil and drink morning and evening frequently. It cures. Properties: Boil and drink; cures coughing up blood.

Remedy for Poisonous Fever

Take: heartwood of "do", heartwood of "chari", heartwood of Siamese cassia, heartwood of jackfruit, heartwood of sappan, "khlum" tuber, "khla" tuber, "fak khao" tuber, cork tree, "nam nong", plai rhizome, ginger rhizome, nutgrass, nutmeg fruit, nutmeg flower (mace), black lichen, red lichen, white lichen, "wang" root, "propo" tuber, "chai" tuber, fig-tree bark, vetiver root, the four kot spices, and Ya-nang leaf. Boil and drink; it cures completely.

Remedy for Herpes/Shingles

For shingles, pustular boils, and the type called "wildfire creeping sores": take the leaf of the sensitive (touch-me-not) plant, strip off just the leaves, pound them and squeeze out the juice with liquor; or apply the pulp directly as a poultice. It cures completely.

Boiled Medicine to Treat Fever, for Pregnancy Care

Take: both kinds of sandalwood (chan), agarwood, pine heartwood, khi lek heartwood, pru heartwood, sakkhi, bael root, thao wan priang, 33 sadao (neem) stems, vetiver root, phikun flower, bunnak flower, lotus stamens, samo thai (myrobalan fruit), 3 pods of ratchaphruek (golden shower). Boil this medicine and drink it. It cures.

Medicine to Protect the Pregnancy

All four kot roots, all four tian seeds, all four kinds of water lily, both sandalwoods, agarwood, kra lam phak, khon dok, cha lut, pine heartwood, sam sip root, thep tharo, cinnamon, samun waeng bark — take equal weight of each. Boil all the medicine and take it morning and evening. It keeps the child in the womb strong.

Boiled Medicine for Blood Discharge (Hemorrhage)

All four semiat, fragrant shallot bulb, garlic clove, phluang leaf, sappanwood — all weighed 1 baht each; saltpeter, weighed 1 salueng. Boil all this medicine and take it. It treats a pregnant woman who is passing blood; asafoetida may also be used as the solvent. Take it morning and evening.

Medicine for a Dry, Hoarse Voice

Take: 108 limes, squeezed for their juice; both kinds of som kung, pounded fairly fine; gold leaf worth 1 fueang; 3 cowrie shells. Method: Put this medicine into the lime juice to steep, then ferment it together with unhusked rice for 3 days and 3 nights. Take 1 tablespoon each time, on waking and before sleep. Pot-Boiled Medicine for Vomiting

Take: pine heartwood, nutmeg, thep tharo, dried ginger, haeo mu (nutgrass), coriander seed, unripe bael, cha phlu root, ya tin ka, vetiver root, shallot bulb, lemongrass bulb, roasted noni fruit — cooked, equal weight of each. Properties: Boil all this medicine and drink it to cure vomiting and churning wind in the stomach. Can be used for both children and adults; used for women with morning sickness.

Medicine for Numbness (Beriberi)

Take: both kinds of phlao, both kinds of hatsakhun, camphor — 1 baht of each. Pound these medicines fine, wrap in white cloth, and soak in genuine imported vinegar for 3 days; then take only the liquid and apply it to the affected area. Properties: Cures numbness in the hands and feet, throughout the whole body. It cures.

Medicine to Disperse an Abscess

Take: saniat leaf, som poi leaf, tamarind leaf, plai rhizome, salt. Method: Pound this medicine together and wrap it in white cloth as a compress ball; tie a white cloth over the mouth of a pot; place the compress on the lid over the pot's mouth, as hot as can be tolerated; then apply the compress to the spreading abscess. It cures. Properties: Cures an abscess at the throat.

Medicine for Hemorrhoids of the Phluak Type

Take: long pepper, black pepper, nutmeg fruit, white tian seed, black tian seed, samun waeng bark — equal parts. Method: Pound this medicine in equal proportion into a powder, dissolve it with fourth-month honey, and take it before meals, morning and evening, and before sleep, a dose the size of a jujube seed. Properties: Cures hemorrhoids of the phluak type and intestinal hemorrhoids. Said to be very good.

Medicine for Numbness (Beriberi)

Take: plai, 1 chang; all four tian seeds, camphor — 1 baht of each; black pepper, 1 baht; tamarind pulp and salt — 10 baht of each. Method: Pound these medicines fine; add the plai and tamarind pulp afterward; pound until combined. Take one dose the size of a jujube seed each time. Properties: Cures numbness, poor circulation of wind, in the hands and feet, throughout the whole body. Said to be very good.

Medicine for Madness

Take: shelled black pepper, weighed 4 baht; dried ginger, weighed 1 chang; raw garlic, weighed 1 chang; 14 makrut limes. Boil these 4 ingredients with the water of 3 mature coconuts; boil down and strain to obtain two thanan of liquid. Add 1 thanan of honey, mix, and cook over the fire while stirring (chanting the Itipiso formula 108 times over it); blend in phimsen (Borneo camphor) to taste. Properties: Taken to cure madness from the blood, madness from wind, madness from listlessness, madness from sorrowful loneliness, madness from excessive brooding, and madness reaching full derangement of various kinds — causing fear of others, crying, laughing, and raving as though possessed by a spirit. Taking this medicine may cure these symptoms of madness immediately. If the afflicted person refuses to take it, it may be mixed into their food and given over 3 meals; it is said this too may cure them.

Medicine for an Abscess at the Neck

Take: both kinds of khao yen, both kinds of som kung — 4 tamlueng of each; khan thong phayabat, 10 baht. Combine and boil this medicine down to one third; take it morning and evening before meals. It cures an abscess at the neck. Said to be very good.

Tonic Medicine to Restore the Elements and Improve the Appetite

Take: long pepper, 4 parts; cha phlu root, 4 parts; chetmun phloeng, 4 parts; ginger, 1 part; sakhan, 1 part; haeo mu (nutgrass), 1 part; both kinds of sandalwood heartwood, 1 part; kradom fruit, 1 part; boraphet, 1 part; unripe bael, 1 part; vetiver, 1 part; pine heartwood, 1 part; cha lut, 1 part; cinnamon, 1 part; samun waeng, 1 part — take these weighed 1 salueng each; the four kinds of pollen weighed 2 salueng. Method: Pound all this medicine into a powder, or boil it down to one third. Take before meals, morning and evening. If a laxative effect is wanted, add all three myrobalans and Indian gooseberry, weighed 1 baht each. Properties: A medicine that normalizes the bodily elements and improves the appetite. Said to be very good.

Boiled Medicine for Leprosy

Take: elephant bone, goat bone, albino-buffalo bone, black-dog bone, thao khlai lan, ba cham mong, cat's-whiskers herb, both kinds of khao yen. Method: Take this medicine in equal proportions, steep it in liquor, or boil it, and take it to cure the affliction of leprosy. Said to be very good.

Medicine for Gonorrhea

Take: black pepper, weighed 1 baht; dried ginger, 1 baht; long pepper, 1 baht; shallot, 7 bulbs; garlic, 7 bulbs; thao khan daeng, 4 baht; thao wan priang, 4 baht; sappanwood, 4 baht; plai, 4 baht; galangal, 4 baht; fingerroot, 4 baht; lemongrass, 7 stalks; salt, 4 baht; rock salt, 4 baht; Thai Glauber's salt, 4 baht; maka leaf, 4 baht; aloe extract, 4 baht. Method: Put all this medicine into a clay pot, boil it, and drink it morning and evening. Said to be very good.

Medicine for Wasting Disease and Depleted Wind

Take: sakhan, ginger, chetmun phloeng, fingerroot, cha phlu root, long pepper, plai, garlic, khamin oi (a kind of turmeric) — each weighed 1 salueng; black pepper matched in weight to all the other medicines combined. Properties: Cures wasting disease from depleted wind, restores strength, restores the bodily elements. Said to be very good.

Medicine for Jaundice

Take: samo thai (myrobalan fruit), 3 baht; ma-euk fruit, 3 baht; white sandalwood, 3 baht; kradom fruit, 3 baht; unripe bael, 3 baht; boraphet, 4 baht. Properties: Cures jaundice, yellowing of the eyes, and yellowing of the skin. Method: If a quick cure is wanted, this medicine should be boiled down to one third. Take it before meals — morning, noon, evening, and before sleep.

Medicine for Protruding Hemorrhoids

Ingredients: shelled black pepper, 10 baht; son thet, 4 baht; sakkhi, 4 baht; khao yen tai (southern khao yen), 4 baht; fresh galangal, 10 baht; Thai ylang-ylang, 3 baht; golden teak wood, 3 baht. Method: Wrap in cloth and steep in liquor for 7 days before taking. If the patient is a monk, it may instead be steeped in sugarcane juice and boiled before drinking. Must be taken often. Medicine for Weeping Sores from Bad Lymph Fluid

Ingredients: northern khao yen, southern khao yen, cat's-whiskers herb, khan thong phayabat, kamphaeng chet chan, thua rae, teak wood. Method: Take these medicines in equal proportions, boil, and drink morning and evening; take half a cup up to one full teacup each time. Properties: Cures bad lymph fluid and weeping, blistering sores.

Medicine for Boiling Bile-Wind, with Symptoms Like Spirit Possession

Take: 108 lime leaves, 33 sadao (neem) stems, 33 samo thai (myrobalan) fruits, 3 ratchaphruek (golden shower) pods; khi lek heartwood, thao wan priang, maka leaf — 4 baht of each. Properties: Cures bile-wind boiling up into the upper body, with symptoms resembling spirit possession — laughing, crying, and restlessness. Medicine for the 12 Kinds of Wind

Take: chili, 1 part; thue, 1 part; galangal, 1 part; phai duean si, 1 part; sweet flag, 1 part; phak sian phi, 1 part; khon thi so (Chinese chastetree), 1 part; dipli chueak, 1 part. Properties: Cures wind rising to the upper body, wind sinking to the lower body, wind causing dizziness and blurred vision, vomiting, and every kind of wind ailment. "Elephant That Wrecks the Stable"

Take: samo thai (myrobalan), 2 baht; samo thet (myrobalan), 3 baht; samo phiphek (myrobalan), 1 baht; ginger, 1 baht; long pepper, 1 baht; dried galangal, 1 baht; bael, 1 baht. Properties: Cures 16 kinds of boiling wind, 7 kinds of wasting emaciation, abdominal cramping pain, aching and stiffness, spoiled urine or stool, and fever from depleted bodily elements, and fever leaving one with no strength or appetite — for these, take this medicine. Medicine for Epilepsy, and for Hysteria

Ingredients: kot chadamangsi, weighed 140 grams; phak sian phi, weighed 140 grams; cinnamon, 100 grams; camphor, 14 grams. Method: Grind into a powder. Take before meals, 1–2 coffee-spoons each time, with boiled water or with liquor as the vehicle. Properties: Cures epilepsy and hysteria, cures convulsions, cures agitation; works well as a nerve-calming medicine.

Fresh Medicine to Expel Blood

Ingredients: rock salt, garlic, black pepper, alum, cardamom, clove, salt — 1 part of each; long pepper, 2 parts; ginger, 2 parts; plai, 2 parts; black tian seed, 4 parts. Method: Pound fine and eat it fresh, or dissolve it in liquor. Used to expel harmful retained blood during childbirth, and to relieve uterine pain.

Medicine for Snake Venom

Take 4–6 leaves of fresh thao khan daeng, pound them fine with a handful of raw rice, add half a teacup of water, and rub to make a rice-rinse liquid; use 2–3 tablespoons of this to dissolve the pounded thao khan daeng leaves, then strain and drink the liquid. Take another 4–6 leaves of thao khan daeng, pound them fine, and poultice them onto the snakebite wound. This medicine has helped people bitten by a king cobra survive.

Boiled Medicine for Enlarged Testicles

All four khi lek, all four makham kai, sakhan, cha phlu root, chetmun phloeng, ginger, black pepper, long pepper, krachai (wild ginger), plai, fingerroot, both kinds of saem heartwood, thao wan priang, phaya mue lek, haeo mu (nutgrass), phok phai. Method: Take equal amounts of these medicines, boil, and drink; then follow with a smoke treatment — take cat's-whiskers-of-the-hermit herb and boil it to fumigate. This has been used successfully many times before. Very good indeed.

Fumigation Medicine for Hemorrhoids

Pradu burl, 1 part; cottonseed, 1 part; male coconut shell, 1 part; pigeon droppings, 1 part. Method: Take these medicines in equal proportion and smolder them in a clay pot set so that the smoke reaches the hemorrhoid; it will dry up and shrink away.

Herbal Decoction, Tonic for the Menstrual Blood

Ingredients: black caraway (thian dam) 1 baht, bunnak flower 1 baht, black pepper 1 baht, lotus stamens 1 baht, dee pree (long pepper) 1 baht, jetmun phloeng (Plumbago) 1 baht, cha phlu (wild betel leaf) 1 baht, dragon's-blood resin (lueat raet) 1 baht, sakhan bark 1 baht, alum 1 baht, potassium nitrate 1 baht, lac (khrang) 1 baht, safflower (kham foi) 1 baht 1 salueng, northern smilax root and southern smilax root, 3 baht of each, Pradu Lai heartwood 8 baht. Properties: a tonic for the menstrual blood, to keep it healthy, and to relieve uterine pain caused by menstrual flow that does not move freely. Directions: this is a pot-decoction (ya mo) — boil and take morning and evening.

Herbal Decoction for Jungle Fever

Ingredients: bora phet (Tinospora), weighed, 1 baht, neem twigs (kan sadao) 33 twigs, both kinds of sandalwood (chan), 1 baht of each, khamin oi 1 baht, ya pak khwai grass 2 salueng, four kinds of flower-stamens combined 1 baht, thao yai mom root 1 baht, the three myrobalans, 1 baht of each, maka leaf according to the patient's humor, about 7 leaves, kradom fruit 2 salueng. Directions: boil and drink 2–3 times a day; for the morning dose, mix in Epsom salt (dee kluea) according to whether the constitution runs heavy or light.

Fever-Capping Medicine, for a Fever Just Begun

Take khonta 1 part, namnong (as printed) 1 part, fig-tree bark 1 part, ching chali (Tinospora crispa) 1 part, cha phlu (wild betel leaf) 1 part, dee plee chueak (a variety of long pepper) 1 part — all in equal amounts. Boil and drink in the morning, at midday, and in the evening, before meals. Course of the fever: sometimes the fever comes and goes — two days without fever, three days with fever — and never fully breaks. Properties: relieves chronic fever, alternating chills and hot flashes. Proven effective by use. Phra Athipan Samacaro, Wat Lamka, Phatthalung — given as a gift of knowledge.

Medicine to Clear the Sen (Body Channels)

Take tamarind leaf 2 baht, som poi leaf 2 baht, ma dan leaf 2 baht, khi lek heartwood 1 tamlueng, thao wan priang 2 baht, the three myrobalans, 1 baht of each, kot nam tao root (as printed) 1 baht, galangal 1 baht, black resin (ya dam) 1 baht, maka leaf 2 baht. Properties: relieves cramping of the sen, epilepsy (lom ba mu), lom wathayak, tight sen, knotted sen, displaced sen — conditions that formerly kept blood and wind (lom) from flowing through the channels; this relieves tension and tightness in the sen. Directions: boil and drink morning and evening, dosed to the patient's constitution — heavy or light, or a moderate amount — increasing the dose gradually in sequence. Medicine for Aches and Soreness

Take khi ka fruit 3 fruits, khi lek, tam sao (as printed), root of "fai rai ho thong" (name as printed; botanical identity not given on the page), yan krong sai (vine, as printed), maka leaf 1 handful, kaffir lime 7 fruits, ratchaphruek pods (golden shower tree) 3 pods, black resin (ya dam), potassium nitrate, Epsom salt (dee kluea), alum — 1 baht of each by weight. Method: boil all together; take half a glass at a time. Relieves aches and soreness from falling off a vehicle, falling from a height, and internal bruising/bleeding. Cured, so it is said.

Medicine for Fever Complicated by Menstruation

Take mimosa root (mai yarap), called locally "ngap," 3 handfuls, dried nipa-palm leaf (as printed) 3 handfuls, cogon-grass root 3 handfuls. Properties: relieves fever complicated by menstruation, and menstruation complicated by fever. Directions: place all the ingredients in a clay pot and boil down to one part from three; drink before meals, morning, midday, and evening. Cured, so it is said. Phra Daeng Ketupariso, Wat Rai Nuea, Phatthalung.

Medicine for Fever Complicated by Menstruation – Menstruation Complicated by Fever

Take the four kinds of "grass-under-leaf" (ya tai bai), 3 handfuls, put in a pot and boil; drink three times a day before meals. Cured, so it is said. Mr. Run Lee Wichit — given as a gift of knowledge.

Medicine for Diabetes

Formula 1: alum 14 grams, inthanil leaf (Lagerstroemia speciosa) 14 grams, ma-waeng fruit 14 grams, mimosa plant and noni root, 14 grams of each, khok krasun (Tribulus terrestris) and phayap mek grass, 8 grams of each, potassium nitrate 8 grams, fresh milk 1000 cc. Method: bring all these ingredients to a boil, let stand 30 minutes, then strain and drink the liquid, 3–4 tablespoons at a time, after meals and before bed. Properties: relieves diabetes, relieves disorders of the urinary system — cloudy, thick urine; urine containing albumin ("egg white"); urine containing blood. Cured, so it is said.

Medicine for Diabetes with Complications

Take "sae ti" (a Chinese medicine, name as printed), weighed 2 baht (30 grams), khao yen tai (southern smilax) medicine, weighed 2 baht (30 grams). Directions: mix these two medicines together, then boil and take half a rice-porridge bowl at a time, twice a day, before the morning and evening meals; use for 3 days, then change to a fresh batch; take continuously for 7–14 days. Properties: relieves diabetes with complications — wounds and blood disorders that are hard to treat, cases leading to amputation of a leg or an arm, and relieves "lotus-pod" boils (fi fak bua), etc. (While taking this medicine, also boil and drink together with inthanil-nam leaf, phayap mek, and phayap mok [related herbs named for mist and cloud]. Cured, so it is said.)
